About Yiyi, the Artist behind MorphiArtForge.
She immigrated to Canada from China to follow her artistic vision for her life now and lives in Ontario. Formerly an architect, Yiyi embarked on her boldest journey yet, to set up her art jewelry studio and drafting table in her home basement. After living in this diverse region for two years, She finds herself inspired by her new surroundings, sparking a wealth of thoughts and creative inspirations that led to the birth of a unique creature in her mind.
Through her watercolor brushstrokes, Yiyi brings to life a race of creatures known as Morphi. Inspired by these creations, she has crafted a new brand - MorphiArtForge, where Morphi plays a central role in her watercolor world and influencing her art jewelry designs. Morphi embodies the themes of adaptation, diversity, and respect for nature, serving as both muse and inspiration.
From Architecture to Artistry
Yiyi's passion for handcrafting and doodling began at a young age. After earning a Master's Degree in Architecture, she practiced in the field for seven years, deepening her understanding of the relationship between the human body and space. Viewing architecture as an extension of the body, she recognized the parallel role that jewelry plays from a different perspective. During her time as an architect, Yiyi continued to pursue handcrafting and painting as hobbies, nurturing her aspiration to become a full-time artist.
Finding deep satisfaction in working with her hands and creating aesthetic lines, in the summer of 2017, Yiyi learned silversmithing skills in China from Chen Zhenan, a master artisan known for his expertise in Shui-style filigree, which is a traditional craft of Guizhou, Shui silver ornaments and an intangible cultural heritage. This experience honed her ability to work with precise filigree pieces, enhancing her proficiency in crafting a variety of art jewelry styles.
Yiyi relocated to Thornhill, Ontario in Autumn 2020, bringing along her passion and all her tools and equipment, to establish her home studio. From spring to winter, new pieces continue to emerge year after year. Yiyi enjoys every day spent in the studio, whether it's sketching, crafting new pieces, or simply reorganizing her collection of stones.
