Welcome to MorphiArtForge! I am Yiyi, the creative force behind the label where adaptation meets artistry.
Today, I want to share an exciting aspect of my work: the creation of crease patterns in copper flat pieces. This delicate technique, showcased in the featured photos, adds a "Bas-relief" vibe to my handcrafted, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) art jewelry.
My days begin in my basement studio, surrounded by abundant tools and materials. Inspired by everything around me, I bring the beauty of copper to life through intricate crease patterns.
I recently set "Flat" as a keyword in my fold forming practice, a laborious process that highlights the metal's natural beauty and transforms flat surfaces into Bas-relief sculpted objects. I aimed to improve my metalsmith skills while fostering creativity using this single approach.
The process starts with selecting and measuring the copper sheets—I mostly use 0.5mm thick copper sheets—and cutting them to the desired sizes. The magic happens when the sheets are folded and creased—not to create 3D forms, but to unfold and hammer on the mountain side of the crease, flattening it and leaving permanent impressions on the surface, resulting in unique marks. Each crease enriches the flat sheet with light and depth, forming a declarative copper plate.
I enjoy creating diagonal and vertical crease patterns, each telling its own story—some strong and powerful, others subtle and hidden. Ultimately, these crease pattern pieces will become the foundation for future art jewelry, transforming into fine art pieces ready to be showcased.
